"The Assayer of Lone Gap" is a short story written by Ambrose Bierce. It was first published in the San Francisco Examiner on December 31, 1893.
The story is set in a remote mining town called Lone Gap. The protagonist, John Bolsover, is a highly respected assayer who is hired by a group of investors to assess the value of a mine in the area. He observes that the mine is of poor quality and advises the investors not to invest in it. However, the investors ignore his advice and buy the mine anyway.
Bolsover is later called to testify in a court case involving the mine, where he is forced to admit that he did not examine the mine properly and that it may contain valuable mineral deposits. He realizes that he was set up by the local corrupt authorities who wanted to drive up the price of the mine, and that he was used as a pawn in a larger scheme.
"The Assayer of Lone Gap" explores themes of corruption, betrayal, and greed in a remote and isolated setting. It is considered one of Bierce's most memorable and well-crafted stories.
